Screenings of Raluca Popa’s animations
A special session of screenings of Raluca Popa’s animations on Saturday, August 20, marked the end of Time Lines, our hybrid project comprised of three online exhibitions and four online and in-person collateral events centred on the work of Ignacio Uriarte, Raluca Popa and Răzvan Anton.
The screenings featured Four human figures, 2012, series of 4 animations (4 sec in loop, pencil on tracing paper, 48 drawings, A4 each), and Fig. 5, 2019, animation (4 sec in loop, pencil on tracing paper, two series of 48 drawings, A4 each).
Raluca Popa’s animations are based on drawings made by her father in the mid-1960s. Once she found these pencil etudes of the human figure, the artist had the impulse to do something with or about them. She realized that turning around them with an invisible camera would be like analyzing them and seeing the parts that would remain hidden otherwise. That’s how she decided to make “a classic pencil animation, drawing the original figures from every angle as to complete, by drawing, their rotation.”
