Museum exhibition: Tania Mouraud at MAMCO Geneva
A solo exhibition by Tania Mouraud, featuring works from the 1970s and 80s, is on view at MAMCO Geneva (Musée d’art moderne et contemporain) between October 3, 2023, and January 28, 2024.
Titled Da Capo, the show revolves around Mouraud’s “meditation rooms”: psycho-sensory spaces, with or without sound, that she suggested to be included in all newly built homes. The artist conceived of these spaces as places to refocus and just be.
In 1977, she began covering the internal and external walls of her meditation rooms with words, blowing up the letters. “At this scale, reading the text becomes more akin to a slow-paced deciphering exercise — a deliberate pushback against the kind of skim reading associated with modern media”, as the museum explains.
The museum exhibition includes works such as the wall painting STOP ON YOUR WAY HOME JUST TO LOOK AT A FLOWER, which comes from The Tale of Genji, a classic piece of Japanese literature written by a woman in the 11th century, and MENTATION, that is being shown in its original format: a text printed on tarpaulin.
