Gaep at The Armory Show 2026 with a solo presentation by Răzvan Anton

19 September 2026

We are pleased to announce our first participation in The Armory Show, with a solo presentation by Răzvan Anton. On view from September 24 to 27, 2026, at Javits Center, New York, Gaep’s booth will spotlight Anton’s new body of work, based on his long-term engagement with archival images and a distinctive heliographic process.

After having worked for several years with public archives such as the Minerva Press Photo Archive, the artist began more recently to look at his family’s collections of images. These consist mostly of 8mm footage shot by his father in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as drawings made by his maternal uncle in the previous two decades.

Anton engages with the archival images through a slow heliographic process. He selects an image, enlarges it, prints its negative on a transparent screen, prepares the image support – A3 sheets neatly covered in wavy traces of blue ballpoint pen ink –, layers these elements, and finally exposes them to sunlight for several weeks on the windows of his studio in Cluj-Napoca.

“The image emerges as a singular, unrepeatable event shaped by time, ink, and sunlight. An unstable yet persistent trace, resisting the logic of endless reproduction.” — Mihaela Chiriac, curator

In Anton’s practice, time has patience. As described by the artist himself, his gesture is “counter-technological”. By using a radically slow proto-photographic process that evokes a pre-industrial sense of time, he implicitly comments on the accelerated imperatives of modern production.

His works, all titled Fading Study, reveal glimpses of landscapes, scenes, bodies, and faces – the ‘ordinary business of living’ (Siegfried Kracauer) presented without any explicit link to specific people or places.

“What interests me is, on the one hand, that the resulting image is not too easily decipherable as a process, and on the other hand, that it remains a print / artifact / document,” says Răzvan Anton in an interview with Scena9. “This explains, perhaps, the hybrid mediality of the works, between drawing and photography.”
