Works

Roberta Curcă

“My current body of work is concerned with layouts and templates from scientific illustrations, archives, apps or industrial contexts and architectural elements, arrangements that can be used to express emotions and thoughts.

My drawings, objects or artist books make visible a dynamic process, one that builds on pre-existing structures, without aiming to mimic them perfectly. I build on objects that are carefully and slowly researched, that over time, through care, consideration, yet inevitable personalization, become steeped in biographic significance.

Stencils, palettes and pencils are instruments that allow flexibility and mobility. They are simple and unpretentious, easy to carry around. Stencils are for me tools that can blend standardization with personalization. Palettes are promises for a better future, not just tools for immediate use. Lastly, pencils and fountain pens act as instruments that reveal the gestural, they are the lyrical eye lending romance to cold data.

Through repeating yet everchanging shapes, motifs, and optimistic displays of calligraphy I try to express the anxieties and the joys of living in the world today.”

Press

“Shifting focus to the urban environment, Roberta Curcă presents a collection of industrial ceramic fragments taken from buildings. Tiles challenges visitors to reconstruct decorative trends in urban spaces, piecing together a fragmented and impersonal history of architecture born from the artist’s fascination with these objects, which are gradually vanishing from public spaces.”
“I try to create a language for documentation, one that encompasses tools, templates, notes, and my general concern with reconciling chaos with organization. (…) For me, the coolest things are complex and contextual. They become cool when you add stories related to location, personal histories, and historical, social, and political contexts.”
