About

Founded in 2014 by Andrei Breahnă (cultural manager) and Raluca Șoaita (architect), Gaep was initially named Eastwards Prospectus and focused on artistic practices from Eastern Europe. In 2019, the gallery changed its name to become consistent with the new international nature of the programme, a result of the connections established over time with the international milieu of contemporary art. The current programme includes artistic practices that reflect various sociopolitical contexts and different generational positions, in an attempt to transcend established borders and circulate artworks and ideas in new ways.

In the span of 11 years, between 2014 and 2025, the gallery presented 52 exhibitions, showcasing new artworks and introducing international artists to Romanian audiences, and participated in over 30 international art fairs.

Awards and nominations include: 2022 Radio România Cultural Nomination, Visual Arts category, for the exhibition Mircea Stănescu: Meditation upon Measure; 2020 Radio România Cultural Award, Visual Arts category, for the exhibition Marilena Preda Sânc: Subjective (De)Constructions; Opening Prize at ARCOmadrid 2019, with a solo presentation of Ištvan Išt Huzjan; Sardi per l’arte Back to the Future Special Mention at Artissima 2017, with a solo presentation of Marilena Preda Sânc.

In October 2023, Gaep relocated to a 300sqm space, custom designed by Tesseract Architecture. The project won the 2025 Share Architecture Award in the category ‘Cultural. Education. Heritage’.
